Important Tips in Dehumidifier Maintenance
Posted on June 29, 2018
When spring comes, rains are also around the corner and summer humidity is a stone throw away. Whole home dehumidifiers, as well as portable dehumidifiers, work in full force during this period to keep the humidity levels indoors in check.
Just like any other unit, dehumidifiers require repair from time to time. Some may have more serious issues than others and therefore homeowners are advised to call skilled repair specialists.
Service Life for Dehumidifiers
Room or portable dehumidifiers can serve you for 3 to 5 years depending on how you use and maintain them. Whole home dehumidifiers, on the other hand, have an average useful life spanning 8 years if well maintained.
The lifespan of your dehumidifier is largely affected by factors such as water quality, air conditioner use, climate, and maintenance.
Cleaning Your Dehumidifier Filter
The filter in your dehumidifier just like air conditioning unit, need to be cleaned or replaced. When cleaning the filter, first unplug the unit and remove the filter. Sock the filter in warm water and bleach solution for about 2 to 3 minutes. Ensure the filter is dry before reinserting it back into the unit.
Most dehumidifiers if not all come with a manual that gives you instructions on the frequency of filter replacement. Whole home dehumidifiers also follow the same filter cleaning procedure. The only difference is where the filter is located in the system.
Cleaning the Water Reservoir
Emptying the water reservoir in your dehumidifier is not an end in itself. This is because mold and mildew may grow again and contaminate your indoor air. The water reservoir in the system should be cleaned with warm water and a mild detergent. Ensure it is completely dry before reinserting it.
If your system is not running, the reservoir tank could be having high water levels. Most models have a control system that shuts off the unit if the reservoir tank is filled and this prevents overflow. Be sure to check the position of the tank as poor installation is also a common cause of dehumidifiers not running.
Deicing Your Dehumidifier
The evaporator coils in your dehumidifier may freeze up whenever the room temperature is too cold for moisture removal. Dehumidifiers are typically designed to be used in room temperature above 70 degrees. When the temperatures go below 65 degrees, the coils may not drip the collected moisture thus allowing it to freeze on the coils.
When this happens, allow the coils to defrost and change or clean the filter. You can move the portable unit to a higher location and this helps the coils thaw faster.
For complicated problems or those you cannot handle, get in touch with a qualified HVAC repair contractor. Doing this yourself could worsen the damage and cost you lots of money in repairs.
